nelson harpineThe Westside Optimist Club mourns to loss of Charter member, Nelson Harpine. Nelson was an advocate of many children's activities on the west side of Springfield.

He was a scout leader, baseball coach and mentor to many. He was a driving force in the development of our baseball complex and fervent supporter of the development of children through many Optimist projects and programs such as the Oratorical Contest. His imprint on this club is still felt. Nelson's request was that donations be made, in lieu of flowers.

Donations can be made to the Optimist International Foundation, in his name and use the identifier, 36-522 on the check. The address is: 4494 Lindlell Blvd., St. Louis, MO. 63108.

Chairman CJ reported at the last meeting that he has located weighted softballs that could be tested at the ball fields to see if they could be used for the derby. It was suggested that he also look at Johnny Mac's for some locally.

The club voted to appropriate up to $25.00 to obtain some variable weighted softballs and a subcommittee will be set up at a later date that will meet at the park to try out the weighted ball. The Home Run Derby will be a fundraiser and several ideas where mentioned that will enhance the experience of the participants such as skills challenges, and 50/50 games.

It's coming up! It'll be here before you know It. Chairman Jonathon has been in contact with Enterprise Lanes and our Second Super Bowl-a-Thon is scheduled for January 25th. We are partnering with Wish I May. This is a very worthwhile cause that we have financially supported and will be working with us on this fund raiser We raised $2464.00 last year and we would like to raise more this year. We are currently looking for sponsors as well as teams. Most importantly, are your media contacts. Everyone needs to begin making a list of your media contacts. Let Jonathan and VP Josh know who they are so a coordinated effort can be made to get the word out.

Pres. Lee asked that everyone begin obtaining items for the silent auction also. The auction last year was a great help in this fundraising effort.
